Dr. Maria F. Benetos is an integrative adult and geriatric psychiatrist who has been compassionately serving the Smithtown community for over 15 years. With a deep commitment to improving the lives of those affected by mental illness, she specializes in the treatment of adult and elderly patients, focusing on issues such as depression, anxiety, cognitive decline, and neuropsychiatric conditions. Her approach to psychiatry is multidimensional, emphasizing the importance of personalized care that addresses biological, psychological, social, and lifestyle factors to promote optimal brain health and overall well-being.
Dr. Benetos has served on the Board of Directors for the Greater Long Island Psychiatric Society and remains actively engaged in professional and community initiatives that advance mental health awareness and access to care.
Born and raised in the United States to parents from the island of Chios, Greece, Maria is a proud first-generation Greek-American. She has maintained a strong connection to her heritage through involvement in various local and national Hellenic organizations, celebrating and preserving Greek culture and values. Multilingual, she speaks Greek, Spanish, and French fluently, which has allowed her to connect with and serve a diverse patient population.
Maria is also an avid supporter of the arts, culture, and local history. Her passion for community engagement and her love for the rich heritage of St. James naturally led her to become involved with the Celebrate St. James Organization. She is honored and enthusiastic to serve as Vice President of Membership, where she looks forward to fostering a spirit of unity, inclusion, and cultural appreciation among community members.
