SOCIAL REALISM
presented by the Students of Smithtown East High School
Students in Ms. Shanian’s Painting One class were assigned the topic of Social Realism. These students, ranging from grades nine through twelve, made a list collectively of relevant topics that today’s teens are involved with, reacting to, or thinking about. Each painter arrived at his or her own topic, and researched images associated with that topic. They drew several concept sketches to solidify their ideas onto paper before transferring the drawing to canvas board.
During this assignment Painting One students simultaneously studied the artwork of Romare Bearden, who was known for his collage style paintings during the Harlem Renaissance. We discussed his application of materials, and how he subdivided his compositions into interesting spaces and painted with vibrant colors. Students found his style inspirational, and emulated his style into their own paintings by combining collage elements. Materials offered were magazines, newspapers, wallpaper and fabric samples. Media also included acrylic paints, acrylic markers, and raised fabric paints.
